Lends a Helping Hand to Veterans Event
BOSTON, MA - For the 13th year, Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency
Management Agency (FEMA) provided a helping hand to Stand Down 2005, a two day
event held annually to address the issues of homelessness among U.S. Veterans.
FEMA’s Mobile Emergency Response Support (MERS) from Maynard, MA was
one of 40 city, state and federal agencies and businesses to contribute assets
and donations to this year’s event. MERS supplied all of the electrical
power to the relief tents including air conditioning to the medical tent. MERS
also supplied a command center where organizers of the event could work from.
“FEMA is always pleased to play a role in helping our nation’s
veterans,” said Kenneth Horak, FEMA Region I Acting Regional Director.
“Our MERS unit and the support staff get a lot of satisfaction in lending
a helping hand.”
The event is hosted each year by the Veterans Benefits Clearinghouse which
brings together all of the participating groups to provide veterans with direct
services and referrals for employment, training, housing, medical care, counseling,
food and water.
More than 540 homeless veterans registered and sought services during the two
day event.
