COLUMBIA, Mo. — The Caruthersville Disaster Recovery Center, operated jointly by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Management Agency (FEMA) and the State of Missouri Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), is changing its hours effective Wednesday, June 7. SEATTLE, Wash. — Lightning Safety Awareness Week, traditionally observed nation-wide during the last full week of June, not only helps get safety messages out in time for the Fourth of July (historically one of the most deadly times of the year for lightning) but also signals summer as lightning season in the United States. More people are outside during the summer: on golf courses, the beach, ball fields, parks and forests…and outside is the most dangerous place to be during a lightning or thunderstorm.
